Directed: Edmund Goulding
Year: 1929
Nominated: Best Actress – Gloria Swanson
Plot in 25 Words: A presumed gold-digger marries a rich man, gets pregnant, and gets dumped all in one day. Luck, fate and bullshit, bring them all back together.
In My Opinion: I’ve tried to stay away from the plots. I don’t want to know the ins and the outs of a story before I watch, but I do on occasion cast my eye over the blurb.
I think I need to do more than cast an eye, if only to prevent watching two very similar, dull films in succession.
The plots were essentially the same only this one had the addition of a child, a few more prostitute implications, and the suspicious death of a spouse.
Well maybe this was a little more interesting!
But barely.
Star Performer: Gloria Swanson. I’m really surprised her career in ‘talkies’ was mostly unsuccessful. She was a very charismatic woman.
Overall: Not a bad film, slightly better then the previous gold-digger story, but only just.
