Directed: Frank Borzage
Year: 1932
Nominated: Best Film
Plot in 25 Words: A no good Italian ruins a romantic love story on the front lines. The war goes on, and everybody dies. Bleak and miserable as standard.
In My Opinion: This was my first foray back into my Oscar films after a pretty lengthy hiatus, and wow it was depressing!
This time it really hit me, the film was set during the first World War and all I could think about was how they had no idea another one was just around the corner.
It made me sad.
Then the plot line made me really sad. It went the same way as a lot of films from the era. Couple fall in love and it all goes horribly wrong and ends in multiple deaths.
Star Performer: Adolphe Menjou as Major Rinaldi. He was a no good duplicitous bastard but he played it just the right side of cartoon villain.
Overall: The film tricked me. I was convinced a happy ending was in sight. I kept watching and waiting and nothing happened.
