Directed: Cecil B DeMille
Year: 1934
Nominated: Best Film
Plot in 25 Words: A passionate epic, set in the sands of Egypt. Love. Betrayal. The world’s most infamous lovers. Made for a pretty boring film in the end.
In My Opinion: I was quite looking forward to this film, a story I was familiar with, an actress who had shown great talent for both drama and comedy…but it just didn’t work for me.
Henry Wilcox’s Marc Anthony came across as a disinterested frat boy and had zero chemistry with Colbert.
This was a disappointment.
Star Performer: Claudette Colbert as Cleopatra. She carried the film, as it’s star should, but it really seemed she was just going through the motions.
Overall: A very visually attractive film. The sets were phenomenal and the costumes/makeup were perfect. Sadly though, it was all flash and no substance.
