Year: 1934

Nominated: Best Film, Best Director – Frank Borzage, Best Actress – Grace Moore

Plot in 25 Words: A romantic drama set in the romantic, dramatic world of opera. Love triangles and inappropriate workplace romances prevent a young star from realising her dream.

In My Opinion: Though a romantic drama about opera is hardly my cup of tea, I mostly endured it. As always the horrific treatment of a woman by the most important man in her life, was a low point.

He bullied and berated her and controlled her life completely. And she loved him more for it.

A surprisingly enjoyable part was listening to the opera, Carmen. Good tunes!

Star Performer: Tullio Carminati. He played a terrible man but did it well.

Overall: Could do with a bit less misogyny but what else is new?
