Directed: Frank Borzage

Year: 1934

Nominated: Best Film

Plot in 25 Words: An outdated notion of a woman’s reputation is alive and well in the army. A silly dalliance causes no end of troubles but ends well.

In My Opinion: Quite a sweet silly film.

The first half was fairly jolly. Dick Powell as a mildly (at the very least) insubordinate enlisted man, plays pranks and disobeys orders.

Before falling for the wrong girl and changes his ways. It sounds quite cliched and it probably is, but in a very charming way.

As always my complaints are towards the treatment of women. It’s funny how these films are turning me into a feminist nearly 80 years after the fact.

Lots of talk of ruining a woman’s reputation and protecting her good name. Wrong.

Star Performer: Dick Powell. He plays charming playboy, insolent rebel and suave gentleman. All very sincerely.

Overall: I enjoyed it. A nice, simple film. A few laughs and no real surprises. Other than that it was considered exemplary.
