1934, Lost

Only one film this time which is great.

The White Parade (1934) – dedicated to the memory of Florence Nightingale it covers the trials and tribulations of trainee nurses. The only surviving print is kept at the UCLA film archive and can be viewed after making an appointment.

It doesn’t sound in the greatest shape, but fingers crossed!

1932/33, Lost

Only one film this set.

State Fair – 1933 – Apparently quite a saucy film that had a lot of scenes cut for ‘moral’ reasons.

As far as I can tell, this film is available but I’ve really struggled to find it. Hopefully I’ll get another chance to watch it, I quite want to see Janet Gaynor in a speaking role.

1931/32, Lost

The amount of lost films I’m encountering is decreasing the later on I get. I hope this trend continues!

The Guardsman (1931) – A brief review I’ve read seems to suggest that the basis for this film is essentially a couple engaging in a spot of role-playing. Bit kinky for the 30s!

I’ve decided that I’ll look for all my lost films every January – and just hope that my list doesn’t continue to grow.

1930/31, Lost

Only two films this year. I’m choosing to see this as an improvement. I found a new site to buy DVDs from, and I’m so glad I did as I got Skippy from there, fairly last minute. I’d more or less resigned it to be a lost film and so pleased I persevered.

East Lynne (1931) – I simply couldn’t find a trace of it anywhere.

Trader Horn (1931) – Again just not in existence.

I’m keeping a list of all my ‘lost films’ and I will continue to look for them. I might get lucky!

1929/30, Lost

Another three films missing in action.

Condemned (1929) – Not available. It goes on the list. I plan to sporadically look for my ‘lost’ films just in case.

The Green Goddess (1930) – Not available. Every search I made just kept providing me with the film Tarzan and the Green Goddess. I highly doubt that will be on the Oscar list but I desperately want to see it. If only to satisfy my curiosity – surely it can’t be a film about the king of the jungle and the reserve firetrucks?!

The Rogue Song (1930) – A lost film which I’m not holding out much hope for.

1928/29, Lost

Another three films fall by the wayside.

The Patriot – 1928

The Barker – 1928

Drag – 1929

The Patriot has only pieces left which is a real shame. Emil Jannings as a Russian tzar was a big hit for me last time and I was looking forward to seeing him play a similar role, especially in a ‘talkie’.

The Barker is not really lost, but as there is only one sole surviving copy held by UCLA I might be waiting some time to see it. I’m not giving up hope though because now I know one exists!

Drag was, according to all reports, a boring ‘talk-fest’ but it’s on my list and I will endeavor to watch it nonetheless. It has recently been discovered but is apparently held by a secret agency and unavailable for viewing. But it’s not lost any more and could be released in the near future.

Sorrell and Son – 1927

The Way of All Flesh – 1927

The Noose – 1928

Sadly I had to miss three films out of my first batch of Oscar nominated films.

Sorrell and Son is mostly intact but with damaged reels and one completely missing.

The Way of All Flesh is considered a completely lost film with no copies in existence.

The Noose has one copy at the museum of modern art in New York. I think that’s as good a reason as any to go there!

I’ll be keeping an eye out for them, in the hope a copy is found but I’m not optimistic.
