It was a bit of a bare field this time. As great as it was to was to have a film excel in all categories, it kind of left a lot of runners up in it’s wake.

A few stars of the era are becoming clear and it was quite satisfying to see work by some very famous names.

Favourite – It’s getting more difficult to pick one. The Affairs of Cellini was so funny, and the dancing in The Gay Divorcee was wonderful, but it has to be It Happened One Night.

Least Favourite – The house of Rothschild. It took no time to decide this. Very boring.

I’m really enjoying the films more, the funnier they are. The high-brow dramas fair a bit worse.

I’m starting to notice a new and disturbing trend. It seems to me that the Oscar board/committee is not overly keen on nominating comedies. Not a lot of laughs in this bunch.

Favourite – A clear winner – Cavalcade. I would watch that again and would happily accept a remake of this. Brilliant concept.

Least Favourite – A tie. 42nd Street or She Done Him Wrong. Not bad films, just instantly forgettable.

I took quite a long break halfway through this set, but I’m back with a renewed vigour. I just hope the films live up to the hype. I did some research lately and bought a couple of books that will hopefully help me with some of the background shenanigans.

This set was a really varied bunch. There was no real theme running through and I think that made for a more interesting time.

Romance, comedy, musicals and even a heart-wrenching sobfest. A couple of Maurice Chevalier sexist shagathons round out the batch nicely.

Favourite – A very close call and it was very nearly Arrowsmith but The Champ just edges it for top spot.

Least Favourite – Probably Bad Girl. There was just not much point to the story, and I needed to reread my review just to work out what ever happened.

There was a lot of good films in this bunch. The quality is definitely improving.

This was the shortest ‘set’ to date and the first one I’ve gotten finished inside a month. There was some epics and some classics. Sadly some incredibly dull films too! A couple couldn’t hold my attention and a couple I couldn’t take my eyes off.

The scope of films is gradually changing. All were basic dramas but the sheer scale is growing. Cimarron may not have been my favourite film but the scope of the production cannot be denied.

Favourite – Skippy.

Least Favourite – Royal Family of Broadway.

Both a close run thing! Min and Bill was equally excellent and Holiday was also shit!

Well I think the theme of this year’s films was dishonest love. A few prostitute dramas and a few gold-diggers thrown in for good measure.

Thankfully I’ve found a new DVD site or my lost list would be a lot longer.

There was a pretty broad range of films this year. Big war epics, prison riots, and just simple dramas. My longest film list so far and it really seemed to drag on. Not my favourite collection so far.

Favourite – The Love Parade. Absolutely brilliant musical, I’ve been recommending to everyone!

Least Favourite – Disraeli. A hard choice because I struggled with so many this year.

Only a couple of films really stood out for one reason or another, but Love Parade is certainly the only one I’d watch again.

I had more of a struggle to find these film then I’d the ones before. It took a massive search of streaming sites and a few DVD purchases but I mostly did it.

The theme of the year seemed to be crime caper, which makes a very pleasant detour away from last year’s theme of prostitution!

I wasn’t expecting to see scenes in technicolour so early. I’d imagine whole films in colour will still be a while off, but with each ‘batch’ of films I can see the quality improving.

None of the films really stood out for me, not like the last year which had several incredible productions. Maybe it’s the lack of prostitution.

Favourite – Thunderbolt

Least Favourite – Coquette

I was pleasantly surprised by my first (and quite probably last) foray into silent films. Some weren’t my cup of tea at all but a few of them really resonated with me. The Last Command was phenomenal. Emil Jennings thoroughly deserved his Oscar and it’s a real shame there’s no existing copies of his other winning film, The Way of All Flesh.

Sadie Thompson, Speedy, and Two Arabian Knights were also a class above anything involving prostitutes. There was a couple I’d watch again and a couple I’d happily forget all about. Either way, watching that many silent films was an experience, one I’d be quite happy to repeat.

It’s unthinkable to me that such a thing as a ‘lost film’ exists. Or rather, doesn’t exist. Hopefully there won’t be too many more.

Favourite – The Last Command

Least Favourite – The Patent Leather Kid
