Directed: Frank Lloyd

Year: 1933

Nominated: Best Actor – Leslie Howard

Plot in 25 Words: A science fiction, time travelling escapade. Complete with all the shenanigans and cliches that go along with it. And bleak, depressing, death and loneliness for all.

In My Opinion: I tried to feel a burst of excitement whenever I get the hint of something different. And this certainly matched the bill. Time travelling? Quite a thrilling concept and I was excited to see how it was handled.

And the answer is, reasonably well. The set pieces and costumes were brilliant. It was quite a spectacle really. The acting was fine but the script was troubling and the direction bizarre.

In a time travelling story I like my protagonist to at least play at caring. Peter Standish (played by Leslie Howard) just talked out loud about how different the times were, to the confusion of other characters and the frustration of me.

And as always – a bleak, lonely death riddled ending.

Star Performer: Leslie Howard carried the film, and he did a more than admirable job with a very suspect script.

Overall: It was rather nice to see a change in genres, despite the similar ending.
