Directed: Lloyd Bacon
Year: 1934
Nominated: Best Film
Plot in 25 Words: Bawdy naval comedy/drama, based on a lingering match of one-up-man ship. Throw in a bit of romance and a near death experience and job done.
In My Opinion: A man and his friend join the navy just to get back at a naval officer who stole his girl. It doesn’t sound as good as it actually was.
There was a lot more humour then I was expecting, most of it physical and very well timed.
It stepped up leading to the near death of the two male leads, which seemed slightly out of place. The whole ending seemed rushed. Almsot as if first views thought the ending was dull and they quickly tacked on a different finish.
Star Performer: Frank McHugh as Droopy. The friend, the sidekick, the comedy talent.
Overall: I really enjoyed it. Rushed ending aside it was a really entertaining film!
