Plot in 25 Words: Two young boys deal with responsibility and the heartbreaking loss of a pet. Heartbreaking film set in the slums and the suburbs. Made me cry.

In My Opinion: Oh wow. This was an awesome film from start to finish to behind the scenes! I just loved it. A very genuine film.

A story I read about the stars told me the main child star, Jackie Cooper was the director’s nephew, and to elicit the best response, Norman Taurog told him they’d really killed the dog in the scene. Those poor children are really crying and it’s horrible! Apparently Jackie was distant towards his uncle the rest of his life. Good! Cruel bastard!

At first I was expecting a childish picture, it seemed to be focused so heavily on children but I was really surprised. I’m not a fan of children’s films but this was different. It had real heart without being over-schmaltzy.

The child actors didn’t seem over-the-top or fake. Of course now I know the depression was real because the director upset them for real but I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes as often as I thought.

The scenes of the two boys trying to raise money were hilarious without being over the top for such a depressing film it was very funny.

And I cried.

Buckets.

Apparently there’s a sequel. I want to see it but I also really don’t want to see it. What else can they kill to make children cry?!?

Star Performer: Robert Coogan as Sooky. When his bottom lip started quivering I was a goner!

Overall: I just absolutely loved it. I think it might well be my favourite.
