Directed: John Cromwell

Year: 1934

Nominated: Best Actress – Bette Davis

Plot in 25 Words: A bleak story of life with a clubbed foot, where the only hint of joy is being mistreated by a prostitute. Over and over again.

In My Opinion: Oh my god this was a depressing film. Bette Davis as the prostitute without a heart was perfectly cast. Every times he turned up to ruin our heroes life, I groaned and yelled at the screen.

Her complete ‘blank’ attitude was perfect for the role, but it did leave me wondering why Philip (Leslie Howard) would care so much for her.

Star Performer: Leslie Howard. How Bette Davis was nominated for an Oscar but not him, is a bit of a surprise to me.

Overall: To say I enjoyed it seems a little odd as at no point was I happy, but I was engrossed.
